ZAMBOANGA

What little we know about Zamboanga is that it was owned and operated by L.A. restaurateur, Joe Chastek, who opened the bar sometime in the 1940s and named it for a city in the Philippines. It was probably better known for its exotic South Seas decor and rum drinks than for a long line of celebrities waiting to get in the door.

Zamboanga was located at 3828 West Slauson in Los Angeles and was advertised as "the most beautiful Polynesian Paradise in the United States." The club's signature drink is said to be a rum concoction called the Tailless Monkey--probably a reference to the 1930s song, "The Monkeys Have No Tails In Zamboanga."
