ZEBRA ROOM

When the Town House Hotel at 2961 Wilshire in downtown Los Angeles was refurbished into a luxury hotel in the late 1930s, the Zebra Room became its swanky supper club. The club's decor featured wild zebra and jungle-themed wall art designed by Wayne McAllister.

While attracting film celebrities on its own merit, the fact that the Zebra Room was a convenient and fun place for dinner before going to the nearby Coconut Grove for an evening of dancing certainly contributed to the size of the crowds. It also helped that those crowds frequently included the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor.

The Town House became a Sheraton property during the 1960s, and when the neighborhood went to seed in the '90s the once luxurious Town House was converted to low-income housing. While the building that once housed both the Town House and its swanky supper club still exists, nothing of the Zebra Room remains but cocktail napkins and matchbook covers sold at memorabilia auctions.
