TOM BRENEMAN'S HOLLYWOOD RESTAURANT

Could a joint with a big neon sign advertising "Glorified Ham N' Eggs" be a Hollywood hot spot? It could if the owner of the joint happened to be Tom Breneman.

Breneman hosted a popular morning radio program between 1941 and 1948. The show was known by various names over the years until it ultimately became Breakfast in Hollywood. The format of the show involved guest interview with stars (For example, Jimmy Durante, Andy Devine and Orson Welles) and live audience participation. Brenenan's program was extremely successful with sponsors (mostly makers of breakfast products) and listening audiences alike. By the mid-1940s Breneman claimed ten million listeners nationwide. United Artists even released a feature film in 1946 based on the Breakfast in Hollywood radio program. The movie starred Breneman, Bonita Granville and Beulah Bondi, and featured musical performances by Nat "King" Cole and Spike Jones.

Capitalizing on his success, Breneman opened his own Hollywood eatery near Sunset and Vine in 1945. He broadcast his show live from Tom Breneman's Hollywood restaurant until he died at age 46 in 1948. After Breneman's death the program continued with various hosts, including Gary Moore, but without Breneman ratings dropped and both the show and Tom Breneman's Hollywood Restaurant faded into obscurity.
