PIG 'N WHISTLE

Pig 'n Whistle was a restaurant chain dating all the way back to the mid-1900s. The first restaurant in the chain was opened on Broadway in Los Angeles with other locations in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Long Beach, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and San Diego added over the years. The landmark Hollywood location opened in 1927 at 6714 Hollywood Boulevard.

Pig 'n Whistle's genre' as a restaurant is a little hard to define because they included everything from a bakery, soda fountain and candy store to fine dining rooms. Regardless of its classification, though, the Hollywood P & W soon became a local hot spot due in part to its convenience for movie goes next door to Grauman's Egyptian Theater and across the street from the Chinese Theater. Inside, the Pig 'n Whistle's decor was a unique blend of art deco and Gothic features such ornate dark woods, heavy beams, paneled ceiling and stained-glass windows.

From opening day on the Tinsel Town Pig 'n Whistle attracted film celebrities. It wasn't at all uncommon to encounter such stars as Shirley Temple, Spencer Tracy, Loretta Young, Howard Hughes, Barbara Stanwyck, or Judy Garland enjoying a treat at the soda fountain or having dinner in the dining room.

As with so many Hollywood Boulevard venues, the P & W began to decline in the 1940s and ultimately closed its doors in 1949. The good news for fans of old Hollywood, however, is that the building was restored to its original elegance and reopened in 2001. While opinions regarding the quality of the new Pig 'n Whistle's food and service vary, no Tinsel Town history buff should miss the opportunity to revisit the Hollywood of the 1920s at this long-standing landmark.
